Superintendent Celebrates 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence

Welcome to the final edition of The Bridge for the 2025–26 school year.
First, congratulations to the Class of 2026! Our 222 graduates have given this community so much to be proud of, and I encourage you to turn to pages 4 and 5 to learn more about their incredible achievements. We also extend our deepest gratitude and best wishes to the six retiring teachers and staff members who conclude their dedicated service to our families this spring.
As our graduates and retirees look forward to new chapters, it is fitting that we look back at the foundation that made their success possible.
This summer, our nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Here in the Bellbrook‐Sugarcreek School District, we view our daily mission as a direct continuation of those founding American ideals. The signers of the Declaration knew a free republic required an educated citizenry. To turn that vision into reality, the Continental Congress passed the Land Ordinance of 1785, mandating that “Lot No. 16” of every township be reserved exclusively to fund and maintain public schools.
Because Section 16 sat directly at the physical center of the township grid, education was structurally designed to be the anchor of the community. Nearly two and a half centuries later, our schools remain exactly where the pioneers intended: at the very heart of everything we do.
Like those early settlers, our community values grit, hard work, and high expectations. At about 2,700 students, our district is uniquely positioned; we are large enough to offer elite opportunities, yet small enough that no student is ever just a number. Our teachers maintain the “line of sight” required to know every student’s name, strength, and story. We intentionally leverage those strong personal relationships to push our students toward rigorous academic standards and the work ethic required for the modern economy.
Our pioneers also understood stewardship. Today, we honor that legacy through strict fiscal responsibility, proactively managing our district assets to ensure maximum return on our community's investment.
As a 5‐star school district, we are proud to fulfill the blueprint drawn up by those early settlers who cleared this wilderness for a brighter future. Our results prove that the traditional American formula of strong families, hard work, and local accountability still works. I think those early pioneers would be incredibly proud of the community we have built together in 2026.
Thank you for your continued partnership. Have a wonderful, safe summer.
Proud to be a Golden Eagle,
