My Role

My job is to support and facilitate growth and development in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social domains. I am able to do this through both direct and indirect ways. Please see below how I interact and support all students.

Direct

  • Classroom lessons

  • Small groups counseling

  • Individual counseling

  • Lunch groups

  • Respond to school crisis situations

  • Build positive rapport with students

Indirect

  • Lead annual 504 meetings

  • Administer and organize building testing - OST, MAP, Cogat

  • Consult and collaborate with teachers, parents, principals, school psychologists, other counselors, social workers

  • Observe students in school environments

  • Provide resources to staff and families

  • Involvement with Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

I will be in your child's classroom once a month for 30 minutes. In these lessons I will be covering topics that pertain to character education i.e. respect, empathy, accepting others, etc. You can check out this site or my newsletter that will go home every month explaining the topic we covered!

SEPTEMBER LESSON

Meet the school counselor, how you can request to see me, why you would see me

Building connections activity - an activity where students identify the hobbies and interest they have and if they were to meet someone with similar interests and hobbies they would feel connected to them. This is a great way to meet other classmates, practice conversing, and learning about one another.

OCTOBER LESSON

Bullying & How to Stand Up to a Bully

In all classes we discussed the difference between bullying, mean moments, and conflict. If a situation does not have all 4 things that make up a bully situation then it is a mean moment or conflict. We then talked about how to handle these situations.

  1.  Tell an adult (if we don't know about it, we can't help)

  2. Walk away

  3. Ignore the bully

  4. Stand up for yourself (use your teacher voice and tell them to stop)

  5. Remain calm

  6. Be kind, don't bully back

Individual counseling can occur when either the parent/guardian, teacher, or student requests to see me. Reasons I might meet with your child include:

  • Anxiety

  • Peer Issues

  • Friendships

  • Coping skills

  • Managing anger

  • Self-esteem

  • Personal problems

  • Emotion regulation

  • Grief

  • Divorce

  • Conflict resolution

  • Setting goals/motivation

  • Problem solving

Small groups consist of 3-8 students experiencing similar situations. This is a great way for students to understand that others are also going through what they are experiencing. Students can connect while also working on ways to handle or manage their situation. Small groups are held once a week during lunch so no class time will be missed. Typically groups are held for 6-8 weeks. Parents/guardians will be informed about groups and a parent permission form will be sent home.

Potential small groups include:

  • Friendship Group - how to make friends and be a good friend

  • Changing Families - adjusting to a change in the family

  • Worry Warriors - dealing and managing anxiety

  • Self Regulation - learning to manage different emotions

  • Girl's Group - making strong connections and building self-esteem

  • Self Control - learning to control impulses

Military Group

Bellbrook is home to many military families and we want to be able to support you and your family! Every month our MFLC, Military Family Life Counselor, and I will be hosting a military lunch group. Students are able to connect with other military students and share about their experiences. Please check out the Military Families tab to learn more!

If you are a Military Family, please CLICK HERE and complete the form. This helps us meet your unique needs! We are so happy to have you here at BCI and in the Bellbrook community. We are fortunate enough to have a MFLC, Military Family Life Counselor. Every month your child will be invited to have lunch with the MFLC along with other military students in their grade. This is a great opportunity for military students to meet others in the same or similar situations as them.

Please reach out to me, Danielle Taylor if there is anything we can assist with.

BCI 5th grade students and staff would like to invite military veterans to celebrate Veterans Day with our BCI students.  If any 5th grade student would like to invite a Veteran (Family Member, friend, neighbor), we would be delighted to have them visit our school.  Perhaps some of our Veterans have never visited BCI.  It is a great experience and creates a wonderful memory for the children while we honor current and past military men and women.

Our morning will consist of a hallway parade at BCI as well as a celebration with the Bellbrook High School JROTC presenting the colors and song in the gymnasium.  To conclude, all guests will receive a breakfast-to-go, where in the sack is hand-decorated by our third & fourth graders.

If a 3rd or 4th grader has an active duty family member, they will also have the chance to invite their Veteran to the celebration. Invite forms will be going home to our military families and all students of the 5th grade.
