Here you will find information about our academic services for gifted students, identification procedures, acceleration options and opportunities for both students and parents.
The Bellbrook-Sugarcreek School District is committed to providing all students with unique and challenging educational experiences.
While Gifted Services are not mandated in Ohio, the District believes in providing a quality and rigorous education that challenges all students.
Through a menu of opportunities, advanced students may participate in a continuum of programs or services designed to meet their unique learning needs, including:
- An advanced curriculum;
- Use of differentiated instructional strategies;
- Placement in specific gifted courses;
- Subject or whole grade acceleration;
- Post-Secondary Enrollment (CCP Courses)
- Honors, Scholarship, and Advanced Placement courses for secondary students; or
- Early graduation.
The type of service and programming provided to advanced learners depends on recent assessment data and what is determined to be most appropriate in meeting an individual student’s needs.
Teachers and staff at Stephen Bell Elementary utilize a variety of resources and programming to enrich and challenge all students. All first grade students are screened for gifted identification in the area of Superior Cognitive Ability in the spring.
Second grade students who are identified in the spring of their first grade year in the area of superior cognitive ability are intentionally placed with a group of other identified students within a classroom. Through this model, students are able to work with peers of the similar ability level and teachers, who have received specialized professional development, and are able to differentiate instruction to meet student’s needs for growth.
All students in second grade also are screened for possible gifted identification in math and reading in the fall, winter and spring with the NWEA MAP Assessment. Students who score in the 95th percentile or above qualify for gifted identification in these areas based on the approved assessment list from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. Students who qualify in second grade will be intentionally placed in a cluster group classroom beginning in third grade at Bell Creek Intermediate.
Teachers and staff at Bell Creek Intermediate utilize a variety of resources and programming to enrich and challenge all students. Third grade students who are identified as gifted prior to third grade are intentionally placed with a group of other identified students within the classroom based upon their area of identification which could be reading, math, and/or superior cognitive ability.

Through this model, students are able to work with peers of the similar ability level and teachers, who have received specialized professional development, and are able to differentiate instruction to meet student’s needs for growth.
In addition to testing for superior cognitive abilities, reading, and math, students at Bell Creek Elementary who are previously identified as gifted in math and/or superior cognitive ability may be referred to complete an above grade level assessment in at the end of the year in order to determine whether skipping a grade level of math instruction the following year would best meet their need for more advanced math content and instruction. This testing opportunity is available each year at Bell Creek Elementary. This is not considered a gifted service but a grade-level acceleration and is reserved for students who demonstrate aptitude that measures two years beyond their current grade level placement and is based on the Iowa Acceleration Scale approved by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.

Gifted Resources
-
Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools are proud to support the growth of gifted and talented students. This support is evident by the fact that approximately twenty district employees (teachers or administrators) hold a teaching endorsement in the area of gifted education. Gifted students may experience a wide variety of instructional programming in each of our schools.
- At Stephen Bell, we offer early entrance to Kindergarten, whole-grade acceleration and gifted cluster groups (gifted students are sometimes placed in the same classroom).
- At Bell Creek Intermediate, some gifted students may qualify for a unique opportunity called, STEP. STEP class meets one half-day per week, where students work on interdisciplinary projects and research topics of interest to them. Gifted English Language Arts and Gifted or Accelerated Mathematics are also possibilities. The difference between "gifted math" and "accelerated math" is that gifted is on grade level, but enriched, while accelerated math is a grade level above the student's homeroom grade. Students who are accelerated must meet very specific criteria, including rigorous testing. If accelerated, the student must take the appropriate above grade-level state AIR assessment.
- Bellbrook Middle School offers Gifted ELA and Accelerated Math.
- Once students enter Bellbrook High School, Honors or Scholarship level classes are options to provide students with an academic challenge. We offer many Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level classes which can be taken while meeting high school graduation requirements.
